Study Aims
The A52 between Clifton Bridge and Bingham is part of the core trunk road network.
The route is heavily congested during peak periods, which leads to drivers using other unsuitable local roads.
Public transport is badly affected by this peak hour congestion.
The need for a study of the corridor has largely been brought about by foreseen developments in housing and industry in the area.
The likely effect of these developments on traffic flows on the A52 has led to the need for this multi-modal study.
The study will be guided by the government guidelines on improving transport:
- integration - ensuring that all decisions are taken in the context of our integrated transport policy
- safety - to improve safety for all transport users
- economy - supporting sustainable economic activity in appropriate locations and getting good value for money
- environmental impact - protecting the built and natural environment
- accessibility - improving access to everyday facilities for those without a car and reducing community severance
The overall aim of the study is consider and identify:
- the opportunities for changing travel behaviour through the implementation of a coherent strategy aimed at modal transfers and reducing traffic volumes
- the contributions different modes of travel can make to improving accessibility for rural communities within the study area
- initiatives to encourage the efficient movement of freight and the maximisation of opportunities for the movement of freight by rail
- the contribution that investment in transport infrastructure can make to the economic regeneration of the study area
- the opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of transport
- the opportunities to contribute to government targets in reducing road accidents and improving road safety
