North-South Movement in the M1 Corridor in the East Midlands

About The East Midlands Multi Modal Study

Like many areas, the East Midlands has seen a big growth in traffic. Everyone experiences the problems caused by this traffic. The Government believes that building new roads or improving existing ones can help address traffic problems but it also believes that, on its own, this will not solve our problems.

The Government ’s transport policy has at its heart a new approach to these problems. Firstly the approach looks at the transport problems faced by everyone, for example:

  • traffic problems at work, school and college times;
  • getting to important places such as the shops, or the doctors or hospital when you need to;
  • moving about the region or further afield; and
  • moving goods around and delivering them.

Secondly, the approach looks at how all methods of transport can help to meet these travel needs without causing the problems we face today. This means looking at how trains and buses, walking and cycling can help as well as cars and lorries.

The Study will investigate problems on all modes of transport and will seek solutions to address them. It will also look at a number of highway improvement schemes that are currently on hold. The study will look at all ways thought likely to improve north-south travel in the area. These might include, but are not limited to:

  • improving rail, coach and bus services;
  • making cycling and walking safer and easier;
  • making it easier to change between different types of transport (such as bus to train, bus to bus, train to train or park and ride);
  • encouraging and making it easier for people to use their car less often;
  • extending the proposed Nottingham tram system or introducing others elsewhere in the region;
  • moving freight from road to rail; and
  • making people pay for driving on congested roads and/or motorways, or charging people to park at work.

As well as looking forward over the next 20 years, the study will make recommendations on how transport can be improved quickly over the next few years.
