North-South Movement in the M1 Corridor in the East Midlands

Welcome to the East Midlands M1 Corridor Multi-modal Transport Study

Please note..

This study was completed in 2003. This website, which was managed by the study consultants, W S Atkins Ltd, has not been up-dated since but remains available for reference as an indication of how the study was carried out and what information was available during the course of it.

For information on follow-up to the study contact the Transport team.

What... A multi-modal transport study means looking at all forms of transport - cars, buses, coaches, trains, lorries, walking and cycling, and drawing this information together to clearly understand what is happening on our motorways, roads, cycle tracks and footpaths.

Why... Everyone is aware of current transport problems: traffic congestion at peak times, traffic pollution levels in our inner cities, crowded trains, lorries using unsuitable roads etc. A multi-modal transport study helps to understand these problems and to develop strategies and plans to work towards solving them.

Where... Our multi-modal transport study area is the M1 corridor between Junction 21 and just north of Junction 30, and between the A1 in the east and the A38/A61 in the west and covers some adjoining areas. See our 'About' page.

Who... WS Atkins together with partners Llewelyn-Davies, Steer Davies Gleave, Ecotec and MDS Transmodal were commissioned to carry out the multi-modal transport study funded by the Department for Transport Local Government and the Regions (DTLR). The study was managed by the Government Office for the East Midlands (GOEM) on behalf of the DLTR.

When... The study will ran from December 1999 to February 2002.
